Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Muhaimin Iskandar, has invited entrepreneurs and workers to sit together and discuss alternative solutions for layoffs.

At the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Saturday, he said that the problems of layoffs and outsourcing of work systems require a holistic solution. Therefore, multi-party discussions are needed.

"This situation requires a thorough approach. We need a holistic solution, especially to avoid layoffs. Entrepreneurs, government, and workers must sit together," he emphasized.

According to Iskandar, an improvement in the economic condition is also needed amid layoffs.

"Some challenges (in the economic sector), such as layoffs, are part of the suffering for our people. Losing an income is a real suffering," he added.

Earlier, at the commemoration of International Labor Day or May Day at Monas, Jakarta, on May 1, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto stressed the government's commitment to improving workers' welfare.

In his speech, the head of state promised improvements in several aspects, including the formation of a layoff task force to anticipate unilateral termination of employment.

He also expressed his willingness to set up a national workers' welfare council to study the conditions of workers, including the issue of outsourcing, and give him advice.

Prabowo said that the state will not remain silent if workers face injustice.

"If necessary, the state will intervene," he stressed.

Earlier, the Ministry of Manpower reported that the number of layoffs in Indonesia reached 18,610 as of February 2025, reflecting an increase of nearly sixfold compared to January.

Central Java province recorded the highest number of layoffs at 10,677, accounting for 57 percent of the national total, followed by Riau (3,530), DKI Jakarta (2,650), East Java (978), and Banten (411).

Meanwhile, several provinces, such as North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Bangka Belitung reported only two to three layoffs.
