Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Investment and Downstreaming and head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani informed that the government is revising the rules to allow third parties to set up electric vehicle charging stations in Indonesia.

According to the minister, seven electric vehicle manufacturers built their factories in Indonesia in the period from 2024 to March 2025.

To achieve the target of producing 2.5 million electric vehicles per year by 2030, a sound ecosystem is needed, including charging stations, he said.

"Therefore, we are revising the regulation and allowing third parties to operate charging stations for wider distribution," he said on Tuesday.

Setting up charging stations is important to encourage the growth of electric vehicle use, he said.

He also asked investors interested in investing in Indonesia to carry out research and development related to electric vehicles.

In addition, the government will provide incentives of up to 300 percent for investors who are willing to conduct such research and development.

"The lack of EV charging stations will reduce interest in using this EV in the future," Roeslani said.

He expressed the hope that Indonesia will emerge as a player or take part in the renewable energy vehicle (NEV) ecosystem.

In March 2025, Vietnamese automotive company VinFast announced its plan to gradually establish 30 thousand to 100 thousand public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) in various regions of Indonesia, especially Java.

Roeslani said that the investment to build 100 thousand SPKLUs is likely to reach US$1 billion.

As of March 2025, the total number of SPKLUs for four-wheeled vehicles has reached 3,772 units across Indonesia, state-owned electricity company PT PLN informed.

Those SPKLUs are spread across 2,515 locations, with 2,667 SPKLUs set up at 1,645 locations in Java, 442 SPKLUs at 364 locations in Sumatra, and 217 SPKLUs at 170 locations in Kalimantan.

Meanwhile, there are 148 SPKLUs at 125 locations in Sulawesi, 246 SPKLUs at 167 locations in Bali and Nusa Tenggara, 25 SPKLUs in 25 locations in Maluku, and 27 SPKLUs in 19 locations in Papua.
