Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani announced that the House will instruct the relevant commission to follow up on the rise in unemployment in Indonesia, as recently reported by Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

“We will request the relevant commission to follow up on the data that has been released,” she stated at the parliamentary complex here on Wednesday.

Maharani emphasized that the DPR will fulfill its supervisory role by closely monitoring how the government addresses the rise in the national unemployment rate.

“The DPR’s role is to follow up and supervise the executive branch regarding the actions it takes. What follow-up steps will the executive branch take in response to BPS' data?” she remarked.

She noted that the relevant DPR commission will inquire about measures taken by ministries and government agencies responsible for labor affairs to address the growing unemployment issue.

“Regarding unemployment, we will consult with the relevant stakeholders on what solutions are being considered, what actions will be taken, and how they plan to follow up,” she remarked.

Earlier, on Monday (May 5), BPS reported that Indonesia’s unemployment rate in February 2025 rose by approximately 83 thousand people, or 1.11 percent, compared to February 2024.

Head of BPS, Amelia Adininggar Widyasanti, explained that the rise in unemployment coincided with an increase of 3.67 million people in the workforce, bringing the total to 153.05 million in February 2025.

She clarified that the workforce figure includes both currently employed and those actively seeking employment.

“However, not all members of the workforce are absorbed into the job market, resulting in 7.28 million people being unemployed,” she stated in a press conference in Jakarta.
