South Lampung (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf announced that the Human Resource Development Agency (BPSDM) building in Lampung will serve as a provisional site for a tuition-free school under the Sekolah Rakyat (People's School) program.

"Today, we carried out a firsthand review of a location proposed for hosting a Sekolah Rakyat in Lampung that will start operating in the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year," he remarked in South Lampung District, Lampung Province, on Monday.

Yusuf elaborated on the plan, noting that Lampung BPSDM's assets will be utilized for school operations until a dedicated, permanent building is completed.

"The plan involves relocating from the BPSDM to the school’s dedicated building once construction concludes. However, for 2025, we intend to use the existing building first," the minister explained.

He also stated that the Ministry of Public Works will conduct a feasibility study of BPSDM's building and facilities before the school starts operating at the temporary site.

"A feasibility assessment is required since we are planning for a boarding school where pupils will engage in round-the-clock education covering formal schooling, character education, and some additional activities," he explained.

Yusuf affirmed that the Public Works Ministry will conduct the assessment this week.

"If the site is deemed feasible, we will move to the next stage," he remarked.

Earlier, on Thursday (May 8), Deputy Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Priyono stated that the government aims to operate at least 66 schools in the initial stage of the program to cater to the educational needs of children from economically disadvantaged families.

He also highlighted that President Prabowo had set a target for each region to host at least one such school with a capacity of one thousand pupils spanning elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels.
