Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono and the Venezuelan Ambassador to Indonesia, Enrique Antonio Acuña Mendoza, discussed efforts to strengthen bilateral ties during a courtesy call in Jakarta last week.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here on Monday, Ambassador Mendoza officially presented his credentials to President Prabowo Subianto on May 6, 2025, becoming the eighth Venezuelan envoy assigned to Indonesia.

During their meeting on Friday (May 16), Sugiono and Mendoza explored avenues for enhancing cooperation in key areas, including the economy, politics, and sociocultural exchanges.

They emphasized the importance of strengthening the two countries roles in multilateral and regional forums.

Minister Sugiono also underscored the need for collaboration in strengthening national resilience and called for the concrete implementation of existing agreements between Indonesia and Venezuela.

The two sides also agreed to boost people-to-people exchanges and intensify interactions between government officials from both countries.

Both sides also emphasized fostering stronger business-to-business ties to boost economic cooperation.

Indonesia and Venezuela have maintained close relations as fellow members of the Non-Aligned Movement. This year marks the 66th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, which were established on October 10, 1959.

Venezuela, known for having the world's largest oil reserves, previously sent humanitarian aid to victims of the Palu earthquake in Central Sulawesi, and helped establish the Indonesia-Venezuela Polytechnic in Aceh following the 2004 tsunami.

Meanwhile, Indonesia operates the Indonesian School in Venezuela, which also serves as a cultural promotion center offering lessons in batik and traditional Indonesian instruments such as the angklung.
