Transmigration Minister Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara stated that foreign investors can serve as final buyers of Indonesian beef, particularly from Sigi District, Central Sulawesi.
"I visited Sigi after I met with a Brazilian cattle investor who is willing to assist Indonesia. Our cattle supply is still in deficit, and we still need to import beef," he remarked during a working visit to Sigi on Sunday (June 8).
The minister noted that the central government requires two million hectares of land for livestock development.
"The Brazilian investor will not only help farmers to breed livestock but also serve as an off-taker or final buyer," Suryanagara explained.
He drew attention to the lack of permanent buyers for cattle as one of the challenges in cattle breeding in Sigi.
"One of our shortcomings for farmers in this transmigration area is the lack of off-takers. Therefore, we will try to help by allowing the Brazilian off-taker to buy the cattle," the minister elaborated.
He highlighted that cattle purchases in the region only increased during the momentum of Eid al-Adha.
"The cattle demand only increases during Eid al-Adha, with more than 100 cattle bought this year," Suryanagara stated.
Hence, he highlighted that the presence of the Brazilian investor as an off-taker is expected to boost sales capacity.
"Off-takers can help increase sales capacity, and we also hope to export (beef), in addition to achieving food self-sufficiency, including in meat," the minister affirmed.
Earlier, his side had also prepared 10 thousand hectares of land in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), for a pilot cattle farming project in collaboration with a Brazilian investor.
"The new concept of transmigration involves communal land to be managed by the community as an asset, enabling a profit-sharing scheme between the community and investors," he noted in a statement in May.
