Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) opens opportunities for cross-country research collaboration when chairing the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI) and ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI) 2025.

BRIN Head Laksana Tri Handoko, here on Monday, emphasized the forum's importance for strengthening research cooperation between ASEAN countries and international strategic partners in building a collective and inclusive science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.

As AMMSTI chair, Indonesia proposes priority topics aligned with the national development agenda, including food, health, the blue economy, the circular economy, disaster mitigation, and space technology.

"We synergize the ASEAN COSTI work plan with the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan," Handoko remarked.

In this regard, Handoko noted that BRIN plays an active role in nine ASEAN COSTI subcommittees covering strategic fields such as biotechnology, marine, material science, sustainable energy, and space technology applications.

"All subcommittee leaders come from BRIN, except for the meteorology and geophysics subcommittee, which is led by BMKG," he remarked.

During this forum, Handoko affirmed that BRIN opens up broad opportunities to strengthen international networks and facilitate cross-country research collaboration.

Various efforts and supporting schemes have been prepared, including researcher mobility, human resource capacity-building programs, and research funding.

"We want to make Indonesia a center for research collaboration in the region," he stressed.

In addition to collaboration in the ASEAN, the AMMSTI-COSTI forum also encourages the involvement of developed country partners in supporting the development of science and technology in Southeast Asia.

Through the ASEAN scheme plus partner countries, such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the European Union, this collaboration is expected to support the regional research agenda.

"We are not just making a declaration, we also targeting real implementation in the form of joint programs and measurable research output," Handoko elaborated.

AMMSTI-COSTI serves as the main forum for cooperation among ASEAN countries in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. The forum will be held on June 16-20, 2025, at the BJ. Habibie Building, Jakarta.
