He said that the commitment was inspired by the success of Singapore’s public housing policy, which is among the best in the region.
“Based on the report I received, Indonesia will build one million affordable flats this year,” he said at the Parliament House in Singapore.
He also lauded Singapore’s success in providing housing to citizens.
“I have always admired Singapore’s success, especially in terms of housing for all its citizens. In real life, we are allowed to imitate best practices. This is what I call copy with pride,” he added.
According to Prabowo, his government will continue the affordable housing initiative pioneered by the sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and the seventh president, Joko Widodo, on a more massive scale and accelerate its development.
The Indonesian government is collaborating with investors from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to address the national housing backlog crisis by building one million flats in Jakarta, including in the former DPR Kalibata complex, South Jakarta, he informed.
The project is targeted at members of the millennial generation and Gen Z who face difficulty owning or renting a house in the capital due to high property prices.
Earlier, the president's special envoy for climate and energy, Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, said that the project is part of an effort to reduce housing inequality that forces the younger generation to live in buffer areas such as Serang and Purwakarta.
Under the plan to build three million homes, the government is also preparing other strategic lands, including 30 hectares of land in Kemayoran owned by the State Secretariat and 41 hectares of land under the Ministry of Defense.
