Blitar (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has urged smallholder and private poultry farms to strengthen their capacity through innovation, such as technology adoption, production management improvement, and collaboration with vocational educational institutions and research agencies.

“Strengthening downstream processes and production efficiency is believed to be the key to making Indonesia not only self-sufficient but also competitive in the global food industry,” he said during a visit to a modern egg farm in Wonodadi district, Blitar district, East Java, on Wednesday.

His trip to the egg farm, managed by PT Sumber Kelapa Beky, was part of the agenda of his working visit to support Blitar, one of the largest contributors to the national egg supply. The two-day visit ended Wednesday.

The visit was in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of strengthening national food security through the modernization of smallholder poultry farming.

Gibran observed the chicken breeding and egg collection processes, automatic feeding system, and harvest storage facilities at the farm, which applies strict biosecurity procedures, including using antiseptic coats and boots to maintain cleanliness and health standards in poultry houses.

The farm, which was established in 2019 and began operations in 2020, is spread over 1 hectare of land and houses around 50 thousand laying hens distributed in three cages, each measuring 10 x 100 meters.

Egg production at the farm averages 2.5 tons per cage daily, most of which goes to the DKI Jakarta area.

Egg collection is carried out between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day on the farm.

Blitar is widely known as a national poultry center, especially in egg production. With more than 20 million laying hens, Blitar accounts for about 70 percent of the egg supply in East Java and 30 percent of national egg consumption.

In addition to laying hens, Blitar is known for the large-scale production of other poultry, such as ducks and quails.

It is expected to take on a more strategic role in the national food security map, not only as a major national egg supplier but also as a center for innovation and the digitization of modern poultry farming rooted in rural areas.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Paranwansa, Blitar district head Rijanto, and several other officials accompanied Gibran during the visit on Wednesday.
