Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment is seeking to set up a uniform network of environmental laboratories across provinces to support environmental supervision.

In a statement released in Jakarta on Wednesday, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said that the laboratories are not just facilities for testing samples, but also strategic instruments to determine the direction of environmental management.

“Without the support of stakeholders in provinces and districts, of course, environmental management and protection will not be optimal,” he added.

The minister affirmed that to support environmental supervision, his ministry is targeting to form a proportional and uniform network of environmental laboratories across regions through strong policy support and a sustainable budget.

At the National Coordination Meeting for Environmental Laboratories in South Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday, he said that the meeting was an opportunity to build a modern, precise, and responsible environmental supervision system, starting from laboratories at the grassroots level to policies at the national level.

The meeting brought together more than 250 participants from various Indonesian regions, including the heads of environment offices, laboratory managers, academicians, and global partners.

On the same occasion, secretary of the Environment Ministry, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, expressed the hope that the meeting would serve as a space for consolidation for regions and agencies in responding to real challenges.

The challenges include overlapping regulations, small budgets, and uneven laboratory capacities in regions, she added.

"In accordance with the direction of the Minister of Environment, we need reliable laboratories," she highlighted.

She further said that the coordination meeting reflected the commitment of the central and regional governments to environmental management and protection, especially the establishment of environmental laboratories in the country.
