Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) has expressed its readiness and commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Environment on environmental preservation efforts through educational and law enforcement initiatives.

This commitment was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Polri Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq at the Polri Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"In principle, the Polri stands ready to enhance the quality of the living environment in Indonesia by backing all the initiatives outlined in this MoU," General Prabowo remarked.

The general noted that he and Minister Nurofiq had exchanged views on the current state of the environment, addressing issues such as poor air quality, mounting waste-related problems, and the risk of hazardous chemical contamination.

"He (the minister) mapped out the severity of air pollution, as well as waste issues in Jakarta and Bali," he remarked.

The police chief stressed the importance of comprehensive measures to address these issues, including education, prevention, and law enforcement.

"There needs to be more concrete action (law enforcement) to trigger a deterrent effect," he emphasized.

Furthermore, he affirmed that the Polri fully supports the Environment Ministry in its innovative air pollution control measures, such as planting mangroves to absorb carbon dioxide emissions.

He also expressed confidence that the government would be able to carry out environmental preservation efforts more effectively, as the Environment Ministry and the Forestry Ministry function as separate entities.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Nurofiq lauded the police for demonstrating a genuine commitment to preventive and corrective measures against human-made environmental damage.

"We are hoping for our newly signed MoU to be soon translated into technical activities," he remarked.
