Head of the ministry's Public Relations Bureau, Sunardi Manampiar Sinaga, mentioned several significant challenges facing Indonesia's labor sector, such as the dominance of informal workers and high youth unemployment rates.
"Out of Indonesia’s total workforce of 153 million, more than half are in the informal sector. Additionally, most have only completed high school education and lack skills that meet current industry needs," Sinaga explained in a statement here on Sunday.
Another challenge in the country’s labor market is the low readiness of the workforce to face the digital era and the green economy transition.
One of the steps the ministry is conducting to address these issues is the national internship program that offers mass project-based training, which combines technical skills, soft skills, foreign languages, and entrepreneurship in a hybrid learning model.
"This program is conducted by 303 government-run Job Training Centers and over 2,400 private Job Training Institutes (LPK) across Indonesia," he said.
Furthermore, the ministry is strengthening the labor market information system through the SIAPkerja platform, which provides real-time information on job vacancies, training opportunities, professional certifications, and job seeker profiles.
The ministry is also striving to increase national productivity, especially in the industry, education, and public sectors.
Activities include productivity certification, the development of productivity centers, promotion of a culture of productive work, and direct interventions in thousands of companies.
The ministry is also actively collaborating with ministries/agencies, the business community, workers' unions, and professional associations. This collaboration aims to enhance training, worker protection, and the integration of education and job training curricula.
