Jakarta (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Russia have agreed to broaden the scope of their cooperation in higher education following Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's recent visit to Saint Petersburg, Russia.

"Indonesia and Russia have agreed to foster strategic cooperation in higher education. I signed the cooperation agreement with Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov in Saint Petersburg," Indonesian Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto stated.

In an official statement cited here on Monday, he noted that the collaboration deal, exchanged in the presence of President Prabowo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, serves as a means for both nations to deepen their ties not only in science and research but also in culture.

He stated that the agreement is expected to facilitate both governments in promoting exchanges of students, lecturers, and researchers; scholarships; joint academic conferences; and partnerships between universities.

"I believe that higher education must be a bridge connecting civilizations. Hopefully, this collaboration will pave more avenues for youths from both countries to study, innovate, and contribute to shaping a better future," he affirmed.

He also expressed hope that the bilateral partnership would help build a more enabling ecosystem for research and higher education.

"Our ministry will work to drive Indonesian higher education institutions to follow up on this agreement with concrete partnerships, collaborative programs, and tangible contributions to education diplomacy and the strengthening of Indonesia's position in global academic networks," he stated.

This agreement takes the form of a memorandum of understanding, signed and exchanged alongside similar documents on cooperation in investment, transportation, and mass media development.

In addition to witnessing the inking of these agreements, President Prabowo and President Putin agreed on the Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia.
