Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Population and Family Development (Wamendukbangga) Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka has said that parents need to understand how children communicate on social media (medsos).

She praised the issuance of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems for Child Protection (PP Tunas) as a significant step forward in protecting children in the digital realm, including on social media platforms.

“We undoubtedly endorse the recently issued regulation. We will explore further how it is implemented at our ministry, including how parents should understand how children communicate on social media,” she said in Jakarta on Monday.

The task will be challenging, considering children’s constant search for innovative ways to stay ahead, she added.

According to the deputy minister, parents need to become lifelong learners and continue updating their knowledge because the parenting skills needed for today’s children are different from those required in the past.

She stressed that parents must continuously strive to catch up and adapt to avoid falling behind.

“Parents need to continually equip themselves with knowledge that is not only important for their professional work but also for what is happening and what children or teenagers are facing. If we lag behind, the technology will continue to advance,” she said.

To improve communication with teenagers, parents need to adopt a better approach—one that focuses more on empathy and affection.

“Every family is different, and every child and teenager has unique needs; therefore, parents are the best judges of how to approach their child in the most suitable way. For instance, if parents lack this skill, they should consider seeking professional assistance,” she added.

The Ministry of Population and Family Development/BKKBN has also released a module entitled 1,001 Love and Drama: The Dynamics of Parent-Teenager Relationships, which describes various parenting styles.

The module is meant to serve as a reference for both parents and teenagers to improve communication and build higher-quality families.
