Tangerang (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that 68 people out of 97 Indonesian citizens evacuated from Iran are still waiting for a flight back to Indonesia.

The Ministry's Director General of Protocol and Consular Affairs, Andy Rahmianto, stated on Wednesday that 68 Indonesians are currently staying at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tehran and Baku.

"We are preparing their flight schedule to immediately return to Indonesia," Rahmianto noted.

He explained that the evacuation of 97 Indonesians from Iran was conducted in several stages, wherein under the first stage, 29 people returned to Indonesia on separate flights.

Meanwhile, the remaining 68 people are still taking shelter at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran and Baku, waiting to return home, he added.

However, due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, only 11 people had arrived in Indonesia.

"Some 11 people have arrived in Jakarta, coming from two regions, namely East Java and East Kalimantan. The other 18 people are still stuck in Qatar due to the airport closure and their flights being delayed," Rahmianto revealed.

He remarked that the government would continue evacuating Indonesians in Iran.

"We recorded 380 Indonesians in Iran. We will carry out the second phase of the evacuation. We are still monitoring the number," he noted.

The exact number of Indonesian citizens still in Iran remains unknown, as the Indonesian Embassy team is still processing incoming requests for evacuation and repatriation to Indonesia, he stated.

He remarked that an inter-ministerial team has been formed by the government to monitor developments in the Middle East round the clock, following the Israeli and American military attacks on Iran.

"The state is present to provide services and assistance to evacuate our citizens, currently located in the Middle East. The situation is still very dynamic," he noted.
