Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is prepared to take the lead in digital transformation in Asia through the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology that is inclusive, ethical, and supports people’s welfare, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said.

At the Asia Economic Summit in Jakarta on Thursday, she noted that AI has been a major driver of change in several sectors. With the right strategy and governance, Indonesia has the potential to become a major digital power in the region.

“This technology is no longer an option for Indonesia. We believe that Indonesia must also play a role, either through adaptation or by leading our region’s digital transformation direction,” she added.

She expressed optimism that, given its large population and high technology adoption, Indonesia can pioneer AI-led digital transformation in the Asian region.

According to a McKinsey report, 92 percent of Indonesia’s skilled workforce uses generative AI. This figure exceeds the global and Asia-Pacific average of 75 percent and 80 percent, respectively.

She opined that with continued investment and development of local talents, AI can be a major driver of digital innovation, public innovation, and industrial progress.

Currently, the Indonesian government has determined five priority sectors for AI development, namely health, digital talent education, bureaucratic reform, smart city development, and food security, to ensure digital transformation supports fairness and people’s welfare.

The government is also preparing a National AI Road Map, which will be a guideline for inclusive and responsible AI ecosystem development.

The minister expressed optimism that active collaboration between academicians, government, and business players is key to realizing equitable and responsible AI development.

She underlined that to ensure AI becomes a tool for sustainable transformation, users must prioritize ethics, transparency, and the participation of all people.
