"We will thoroughly evaluate standard operating procedures, erect more posts along hiking trails, and provide technology-powered equipment such as a radio frequency identification system installed on climbers' bracelets to allow for quick emergency response," he told the media in Jakarta on Monday.
Antoni made these statements following the tragic case of Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, who fell and went missing during a hike on Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, on June 21. She was found dead five days later at the rocky bottom of a ravine, 600 meters below the hiking trails.
He stated that the Ministry of Forestry plans to carry out certification for hiking guides and categorize mountains based on their risk levels.
Highlighting responsive measures, the minister noted that the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) had gained international recognition as a reliable SAR agency, ranking among the top four in the Asia-Pacific region.
Despite this accomplishment, Antoni emphasized the importance of Basarnas continuing to enhance its capabilities, particularly by partnering with professional community members.
He further explained that the Forestry Ministry, Basarnas, and other relevant institutions are drafting cooperation agreements to strengthen Indonesia's ability to handle emergencies.
"Our country lies within the Ring of Fire. While Basarnas has proven its reliability, it remains essential to collaborate with community-based volunteers and ensure the readiness of necessary facilities and infrastructure," he affirmed.
Furthermore, the minister urged the public to prioritize safety during hikes.
"Unlike going to a mall, climbing a mountain requires physical and mental preparation along with proper equipment. Do not compromise safety just to keep up with a trend," he advised.
