“We hope that the proposed names truly understand the geopolitical and global situation,” she said in a press statement following a plenary session at the Parliamentary Complex here Tuesday.
She also emphasized that the selected ambassador must be welcomed by the host country.
“They must be accepted by the countries to which they are chosen as ambassadors,” she said.
Additionally, Maharani highlighted the importance of the nominee’s diplomatic competence and ability to engage with relevant stakeholders in the host nation.
“They must be capable of communicating and coordinating with any stakeholder there,” she said.
She informed that the House will wait for the government to issue an official letter naming the ambassador candidate before initiating the fit and proper test process.
“Regarding the nominee for the ambassador, the DPR is waiting for the letter from the government,” she stated.
On Monday, the deputy chairperson of DPR’s Commission I, Anton Sukartono, urged Foreign Minister Sugiono to fill vacant ambassadorial posts at several Indonesian embassies, including in the United States.
He stressed that ambassadors play a crucial role under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not only by protecting Indonesian citizens abroad but also advancing diplomacy and other key missions.
He informed that currently, ambassadorial posts are lying vacant at 12 Indonesian embassies, including the one in Washington D.C.
The post of Indonesian ambassador to the US has remain unfilled since 2023 after the previous incumbent was appointed as deputy minister of state-owned enterprises.
