Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding, has expressed deep condolences over the death of an Indonesian migrant worker, identified as Azwar, in Cambodia.

"I express my condolences for Azwar’s passing,” he said in a statement released here on Tuesday.

The minister noted that Azwar had left to work in Cambodia illegally. He was not registered on the ministry’s Computerized System for Services and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (SiskoP2MI).

Minister Karding has repeatedly urged the public to exercise caution in looking up employment information, especially overseas job offers that promise high salaries.

He emphasized that the Indonesian government has never collaborated with Cambodia, Thailand, or Myanmar for the placement of Indonesian migrant workers.

He said that cases of fraud targeting Indonesian migrant workers, such as Azwar, are a recurring problem. They begin with an offer to work illegally abroad at a high salary by friends, colleagues, syndicates, or job vacancies on social media platforms, he informed.

Therefore, Karding urged the public to obtain information on job placements through the Ministry of P2MI, the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Center (BP3MI), the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Post (P4MI), and other official placement agencies.

“Ensure the accuracy of the information through the Ministry of P2MI, BP3MI, P4MI, LTSA (One-Stop Integrated Service), or the Manpower Office in the district/city. Be vigilant and careful before leaving (to work abroad),” he emphasized.

Azwar left for Cambodia from Medan, North Sumatra, in April 2025.

He was initially invited by a man identified with the initial A, who also lives in Medan city, to work as a singer in Malaysia and offered a salary of US$800. However, he was sent to Cambodia to work for a scam company instead.

Azwar died after reportedly falling from the third floor of a building while in Cambodia.
