Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf has said that all levels of Sekolah Rakyat (People’s Schools), from elementary to high schools, will utilize tablets in the learning process.

He confirmed here on Wednesday that the tablets will be tailored to students’ learning needs, and will be lent to students during the course of their education.

“At the moment, just for the learning process. We will see (its implementation) until they graduate,” Yusuf said.

The minister informed that his administration is working with the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry to customize the tablets to ensure the devices are solely used for learning, and not for accessing inappropriate content.

“Insha Allah, its (contents, access) will be strictly (curated, monitored),” he stressed.

According to Yusuf, the tablets are among the amenities that the government will provide to help children from extremely poor families access digital-based learning.

The Sekolah Rakyat initiative is set to kick off on July 14, 2025. All operational costs of the program, such as students’ education, boarding, meals, and learning tools, will be covered by the government.

The first phase of the program will cover 100 locations across Indonesia, and is expected to cater to an estimated 9,700 students from underprivileged families.

Yusuf said he is confident that the program will be implemented on time. The government is also preparing 100 additional school locations, which include the ministry’s building assets and the Manpower Ministry’s training centers.

At least 200 schools are expected to become operational in 2025, the minister added.

He also affirmed that the schools are not just meant for underprivileged children from urban areas, but also children from remote and indigenous communities, such as Jambi’s Anak Dalam people.
