Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police (Polri) deployed its personnel to assist in evacuating victims after the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry sank in the Bali Strait on Wednesday night (July 2).

“We continue to coordinate with the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Navy, and other relevant agencies in the SAR operation," Head of Polri's Public Information Bureau Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko stated here on Thursday.

He revealed that East Java Regional Police Chief Inspector General Nanang Avianto was present at the scene to oversee the evacuation and ensure that SAR efforts are being carried out as effectively as possible.

To support the operation, the East Java Water and Air Police have deployed four vessels to assist in the SAR mission.

Andiko urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and follow official updates on the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya victim evacuation from trusted sources.

“The search is still ongoing, and updates will be provided to the public regularly,” he stated.

He also expressed his condolences over the incident. “Our prayers are with the families of the victims,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Director General of Sea Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation Muhammad Masyhud reported that as of 10 a.m. local time on Thursday, four people had been confirmed dead and 31 passengers had been rescued.

He confirmed that the ferry sank in the Bali Strait, at coordinates of 8°9'32.35"S 114°25'6.38"E on Wednesday (July 2) at around 11:35 p.m. local time.

KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya was sailing from Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi, East Java, to Gilimanuk Port, Bali, when it was reported in distress at 11:20 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

“According to reports, the ferry sank at 11:35 p.m. WIB,” Masyhud stated.
