Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Sport Climbing Federation (FPTI) Secretary General, Wahyu Pristiawan Buntoro, said Veddriq Leonardo’s gold medal in the speed discipline at the 2024 Paris Olympics serves as a major motivation for other athletes eyeing global success.

Wahyu noted that FPTI is currently developing all climbing disciplines—speed, lead, and boulder—within its national program. He expressed hope that Indonesian climbers will continue to pursue excellence in international competitions.

“Veddriq’s success at Paris 2024 should serve as a spark of inspiration and motivation for the entire Indonesian sport climbing community,” Wahyu stated in Jakarta on Friday (July 4).

He remarked that one of the keys to sustaining Olympic-level success is tiered athlete development, starting from the youth categories up to the senior level.

This also involves ensuring equal access to training and development opportunities across all regions of the country, as well as consistently sending athletes to compete in international tournaments.

“In the end, it all comes down to a structured and continuous development process—and we are fully committed to that,” he remarked.

Currently, FPTI has sent 10 speed climbers to represent Indonesia at the 2025 IFSC Climbing World Cup in Krakow, Poland.

Most of these athletes are seasoned climbers with notable international achievements, including Veddriq Leonardo, Kiromal Katibin, and Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi.

The 10 climbers are split into two categories—men and women—with five athletes in each group.

Indonesia’s representatives will compete in the qualification round on Saturday at 6 p.m. Indonesian time (WIB) at the Krakow Market Grand Square, Rynek Glowny. Those who qualify will advance to the finals at the same venue on Sunday (July 6) at 5 p.m. WIB.
