Kupang (ANTARA) - Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province will host a new international cycling event, the “Tour de EnTeTe,” from September 10 to 21, aimed at showcasing the region’s tourism potential.

More than 100 professional cyclists, divided into 20 teams, are expected to participate in the inaugural race. Six teams — about 30 riders — will represent Indonesia, while the remaining 14 teams, comprising around 70 riders, will come from abroad.

Participating countries include Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Professional cycling clubs from the United Arab Emirates and Europe have also confirmed their participation.

The race will span 10 stages, crossing NTT’s three main islands: Timor, Sumba, and Flores. It will begin in Kupang and conclude in Labuan Bajo, a world-famous tourist destination.

NTT Governor Melki Laka Lena said the idea for the event emerged from a March discussion between local government heads and the Ministry of Tourism.

"During the discussion, it was agreed that NTT must pursue creative breakthroughs to stimulate tourism amid budget constraints," he said in a statement issued Sunday.

Lena emphasized that NTT is home to many promising tourist destinations. Through this cycling event, the provincial government hopes to blend natural beauty and cultural heritage with the spirit of sport.

He said cycling offers more than just competition — it brings excitement, visual appeal, and meaningful community interaction.

"This is a celebration of NTT, and a way to present it to the world," he remarked.

Lena expressed confidence that Tour de EnTeTe will have a positive economic and social impact.

"The three main islands — Timor, Sumba, and Flores — each offer unique landscapes. This long journey will drive local economic activity and create a domino effect for more inclusive and balanced tourism growth," he added.
