Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted, sending a volcanic ash column as high as 18 thousand meters above its summit.

"There was an eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, East Nusa Tenggara, on July 7, 2025, at 11:05 local time, with the ash column observed reaching approximately 18 thousand meters above the peak," Fajarudin M. Balido, an officer from the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki monitoring post, stated on Monday.

Balido reported that the ash column appeared gray to black, with thick intensity, drifting toward the North, Northeast, and Northwest.

He stated that the eruption was recorded on a seismogram, showing a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and lasting about six minutes and 26 seconds.

"The eruption was accompanied by a loud booming sound and hot clouds that traveled up to five kilometers to the North and Northeast," Balido remarked.

Based on the analysis results of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVBMG), Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's status is currently at Level IV (Alert).

The PVMBG has issued a recommendation for the community around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and for visitors as well as tourists to avoid all activities within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano, as well as within a seven-kilometer sector stretching from the southwest to northeast of the eruption center.

The community is also advised to remain calm, follow local government instructions, and refrain from believing unverified information.

People are also advised to be alert for possible volcanic mudflows in rivers originating from the peak of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki during periods of heavy rain, especially in the Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, and Nawakote areas.

People affected by ashfall from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki must wear masks or cover their nose and mouth to protect against respiratory hazards from volcanic ash.
