Jakarta (ANTARA) - At the 17th BRICS Summit, President Prabowo Subianto urged BRICS members to initiate a South-South economic compact to improve access for developing countries in the Global South, enabling them to better integrate into global supply chains.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir confirmed this in a statement received here on Monday. The summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, discussed various issues including multilateral relations, finance, and artificial intelligence.

"It is expected that BRICS (nations) can unite Global South countries and consistently remind that international law and a strong multilateral system are necessary for developing countries to create a conducive situation for development," Nasir elaborated.

During the summit, member countries agreed on the need to lead the Global South countries in developing and advancing multilateral relations, as this has not been sufficiently prioritized recently.

The outcomes of the meeting are detailed in the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, which states that members agreed to reform global governance, strengthen multilateralism, and condemn Israel's attack on Iran.

The members also called on Israel to stop using hunger as a weapon against Palestinians in Gaza.

Brazil's President, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, and China's Premier Li Qiang attended the event.

Other representatives included South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Iranian Prime Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi.

At the meeting held on July 6-7, President Prabowo was accompanied by Nasir, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

The summit was closed to the public but briefly opened for Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to deliver remarks about the event.

BRICS, established in 2009, now comprises member countries whose combined population accounts for 40 percent of the world's total. The group also represents a third of the global economic output.

Indonesia officially joined BRICS on January 6, 2025.
