West Manggarai, East Nusa Teng (ANTARA) - Head of the Komodo Labuan Bajo Airport’s management unit (UPBU), Ceppy Triono, informed that AirAsia canceled flights to Labuan Bajo, Manggarai Barat district, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday, following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is located in the Flores Timur district of the province.

“As of Monday afternoon, one airline has canceled its flights, namely AirAsia on the Denpasar-Labuan Bajo route, which was supposed to arrive at 5 p.m. local time and return to Denpasar at 5:30 p.m. local time,” he said on Monday.

He added that the Komodo Labuan Bajo Airport, which is an international airport, remained open on Monday since it was not yet affected by the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

“The airport has not been closed due to ground assessment, such as results of the paper test, which are still negative,” he informed.

However, the airport management has taken measures to anticipate any impact from the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki to the West Manggarai district’s airspace.

“We have also coordinated with the Harbor Master and Port Authority (KSOP) to prepare for a post,” he added.

Meanwhile, the El Tari Kupang Airport’s management informed that four flights from Kupang and Flores Island were canceled due to the eruption.

Two airlines, NAM Air and Wings Air, announced flight cancellations as a precautionary measure against volcanic ash. They cancelled four flights: from El Tari Kupang Airport to Frans Seda Maumere Airport and back; and Kupang to Larantuka, Flores Timur, and back.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in Wulanggitang sub-district, Flores Timur district, erupted on Monday, sending a column of volcanic ash measuring up to 18 thousand meters above the mountain’s peak.

Visually, the ash column was observed to be thick, gray to black, and leaning toward the north, northeast, and northwest.

On a seismogram, the eruption was shown to have a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a temporary duration of approximately 6 minutes and 26 seconds.
