Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia aims to make Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas) a global benchmark for online child protection, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid stated.

The minister presented the regulation to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin during a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday (July 9).

“PP Tunas reflects Indonesia’s commitment to protecting children on the internet to ensure the health and welfare of future generations,” she noted in a press release issued in Jakarta on Thursday.

She highlighted that the regulation provides a legal framework to help digital platforms create a safe and accessible digital environment for children and youth.

Alongside promoting PP Tunas, Hafid also thanked the ITU for establishing a representative office in Jakarta.

She said this step reflects that Indonesia has earned the union’s trust to serve as a hub for its programs in the Southeast Asian region.

“The ITU Representative Office in Jakarta has facilitated the implementation of programs with a wide impact in Southeast Asia, including those focused on youth protection in the digital space,” Hafid remarked.

She also made the most of the meeting to request the ITU’s continued support for capacity-building initiatives in Indonesia, especially in frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions.

The minister then voiced Indonesia’s eagerness to partner with the ITU in addressing strategic issues, such as artificial intelligence governance, the development and application of wireless communication technologies, and strategies for nurturing national digital talent.

“Guidelines from the ITU will play a crucial role in ensuring that our policies remain inclusive, progressive, and aligned with global standards,” she emphasized.

Hafid also affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to actively participating in the World Telecommunication Development Conference, scheduled for November 17–28 this year in Baku, Azerbaijan.
