Sorong (ANTARA) - The Southwest Papua provincial government is collaborating with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) to draft a contingency plan document that will serve as a comprehensive guideline for addressing social conflicts in the region.

Head of Southwest Papua’s Office of Fire, Disaster Mitigation, and Public Order Enforcement, Vicente Campana Baay, said that the document is expected to help the provincial government strengthen its preparedness to mitigate social conflicts and minimize their impacts.

“Since Southwest Papua is a new province, we find it important to prepare a wide range of things, including a contingency plan document,” he informed in Sorong, Southwest Papua, on Tuesday.

He also highlighted the role of ADRA, which is an international humanitarian organization focused on development, disaster mitigation, and community empowerment.

“In Southwest Papua, ADRA is our strategic partner in the formulation of the social conflict contingency plan,” Baay said.

Stressing the importance of the document, the official highlighted that a multidimensional approach is needed to resolve social conflicts, given that they tend to have a lasting negative impact on society.

“While natural disasters prompt quick responses, social conflicts require a different approach that covers mental and physical recovery and the provision of supporting facilities,” he argued.

He then affirmed that the document’s formulation marks a crucial first step for Southwest Papua toward developing an integrated, well-organized system to address social conflicts.

The document, he added, is expected to serve as a reference for policymakers in all districts and cities across Southwest Papua.

“We hope that the contingency plan document will become a benchmark for policymakers in determining the direction of development,” he said.

He also emphasized that preventing and resolving social conflicts is essential to ensure smooth development and maintain stability and order in society.
