Carrying flags and banners, drivers from Jakarta and surrounding areas began assembling around 1:15 p.m. local time.
The demonstration did not significantly disrupt traffic on nearby roads. Police allowed vehicles to pass, despite parts of the street being used for motorcycle parking and the rally.
During the protest, the coordinator reminded participants not to carry out “sweeps,” or forcibly stop fellow drivers who chose to continue working.
Earlier, Jakarta Metropolitan Police had deployed 1,437 officers to secure the rally near the southern area of Monas.
"We urge the demonstrators to follow the rules and comply with instructions from security personnel on the ground," said Central Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro.
He stressed that officers would safeguard the protest in a humane and professional manner.
"We also call on all speakers to keep the atmosphere calm, avoid provocation, and not incite others to commit acts of anarchy," he added.
