Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation is currently holding discussions with several stakeholders on the plan to raise the fares of online taxis by eight to 15 percent.

Aan Suhanan, director general of land transportation at the ministry, clarified that the plan is still in the discussion stage, adding that the process for turning it into a policy or regulation would be a lengthy one.

“Regarding reports of an 8–15 percent rise in online taxi fares, we are still conducting an in-depth study. This means we have not made a final decision, as a rigorous process is underway,” he informed in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Given the importance of ensuring fairness for all, the government will take a range of aspects into consideration and not make hasty decisions, he added.

In this context, Suhanan pointed to the need for a more favorable profit-sharing mechanism between taxi companies and their drivers, while paying special attention to the drivers’ demand to cap companies’ share at 10 percent of the fare.

To ensure objectivity, he added, the government will process relevant data by partnering with independent bodies. This way, the study’s results will be reliable and reflect the actual conditions in the field.

He further said that the government intends to consult experts, academics, taxi companies, drivers, online app-based sellers, and consumers on the study’s results.

The director general then assured the public that the final decision would accommodate the interests of all stakeholders, particularly online taxi drivers and micro, small, and medium enterprises that market their products through such apps.

“In short, we are taking an inclusive, multi-stakeholder approach to ensure that the planned regulation serves the common good rather than benefiting certain parties,” he added.
