Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Higher Education, Science, and Technology Ministry and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) agreed to strengthen collaboration to push maritime sector transformation based on higher education, applied research, and technological innovation.

"KKP is closely involved in research within our ministry. We will also involve universities, so that our research can impact progress in the fisheries and maritime sectors, as well as for the nation," Higher Education Minister Brian Yuliarto noted in a statement here on Friday.

The minister emphasized that research developed at universities needs to be oriented toward creating a tangible impact on the development of the maritime sector.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening cross-ministerial cooperation and collaboration to encourage the widespread use of research in supporting national development.

Meanwhile, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono outlined four priority agendas in the collaboration: strengthening education, salt research, seaweed development, and applying solar energy technology.

He noted that the use of technology is essential for achieving more efficient and environmentally friendly fisheries.

"One-day fishing boats will be developed with solar cells. Thus, these boats will no longer use fuel. With this, we will be much more efficient and environmentally cleaner," Trenggono elaborated.

Trenggono stated that initial trials of solar-powered fishing boats would be conducted in coastal areas where many fishermen carry out their daily fishing activities.

The technology to be used in the trial is designed to replace fuel with renewable energy, utilizing a battery and solar panel system tailored to the fishermen's operational needs.

Research on salt and seaweed commodities will continue to be developed through collaboration among universities, ministries, and business actors.

In addition, this collaboration also follows the directive of President Prabowo Subianto, who stressed that Indonesia must achieve self-sufficiency in national salt production, eliminating the need for government salt imports.
