Head of Public Relations for the West Java Regional Police Senior Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan said in Bandung on Monday that LS’ arrest was the result of close cooperation between West Java Regional Police and immigration authorities.
LS came under the immigration scanner after the police filed a travel ban against her.
“LS was finally apprehended at immigration, and we immediately went there, led by the director of criminal investigation at the West Java Regional Police,” Rochmawan informed.
He said that the 69-year-old woman allegedly played a pivotal role in the syndicate as a direct liaison between illegal adoption agencies in Indonesia and those in Singapore.
“This individual played a major role in the baby trafficking and kidnapping network,” he added.
The West Java Regional Police rescued six babies who were about to be trafficked by the syndicate, and are continuing their investigation into the alleged trafficking of 25 other infants who were sold off.
“We have been given time to conduct an in-depth investigation so that we can connect all the relevant parties—from the recruiters, to the foster carers, and also the agencies seeking adoption in Singapore,” Rochmawan said.
Meanwhile, director general of criminal investigation at the West Java Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Surawan, said that members of the baby trafficking syndicate falsified several documents, including birth certificates, family cards (KK), identity documents, and passports.
“The certificates state that the biological parents are those listed on the KK, so there is an element of falsification,” he explained.
Using the falsified documents, passports were obtained for the babies, who were sent to Singapore via Jakarta, he added.
