"We want to ensure that technology, including AI, will not undermine fundamental journalistic values, but instead, strengthen independent and responsible journalism," he noted in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Patria emphasized that Indonesia is promoting a fair, inclusive digital ecosystem that supports quality journalism.
He drew attention to the drastic shift in news consumption in Indonesia, noting that 57 percent of Indonesians now rely on social media as their primary source of news, and 40 percent use social media as their primary source of daily information.
Among young people aged 18–24 years, this figure has increased by more than 50 percent.
"This shift has caused the national media industry to face serious challenges, namely declining advertising revenue, reduced public trust, and a tendency to avoid mainstream news," he remarked.
In this context, he underlined the importance of fair regulations to protect the rights of journalists amid the dominance of global digital platforms, which are projected to capture 81 percent of advertising spending in the Asia Pacific by 2028.
"The Indonesian government is currently bolstering regulatory efforts that support publishers' rights on digital platforms. This is not merely about economic sustainability but also about maintaining public information integrity," he stated.
Patria made the remarks at the CTRL+J Asia Pacific (APAC) International Forum held in Jakarta on Tuesday. The forum brought together stakeholders, including those from the government, technology industry, media, and civil society, to develop a joint strategy.
"It is time to build strong collaboration between the media and technology giants so that quality content receives proper recognition and compensation," he concluded.
