Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has called for stronger cooperation between Southeast Asian nations to ensure maximum protection for migrant workers and their families within the framework of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

Deputy Minister of Human Rights, Mugiyanto, gave the call while speaking at the Regional Dialogue on Responsible Business and Migration in ASEAN, held in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday.

“In a bid to support such collaboration, the Indonesian Human Rights Ministry, through Presidential Regulation No. 60 of 2023, has introduced the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights, whose active term will end in September 2025," he said, as per a statement released here on Wednesday.

He added that his ministry is currently working on a revision of the presidential regulation to extend the period of the national strategy.

The revision, he continued, will expand the number of indicators for worker protection from 12 to 13 and shift due diligence obligations for business and human rights from voluntary to soft-mandatory.

The deputy minister also urged ASEAN countries to immediately ratify the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families, which came into force in 2003.

Indonesia and the Philippines remain the only Southeast Asian nations to have ratified the global pact.

Mugiyanto expressed confidence that effective strategies, inclusive economic growth, and regional cooperation are essential to promote and uphold human rights, especially for laborers working abroad.

Expressing similar sentiments, Thai Minister of Justice, Tawee Sodsong, urged participants at the dialogue to unite against common challenges, especially those concerning the protection of human rights by states and business actors.

He also highlighted the importance of adhering to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
