Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto consistently prioritizes the interests of Indonesian people in diplomacy and negotiations, especially regarding trade tariff negotiations with US President Donald Trump.

In an exclusive interview with ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday, Sugiono stated that the head of state was aware that the outcome of the tariff negotiations would directly impact the people's welfare since most Indonesian exports to the US are labor-intensive industrial products.

Hence, the negotiations are not merely about numbers but also concern the dignity of the Indonesian nation, the minister, born in Takengon, Aceh, on February 11, 1979, explained.

"I believe it is the protection of human dignity that President Prabowo upholds in his diplomacy and (tariff) negotiations," he remarked.

On July 16, 2025, Donald Trump announced that a 19 percent import tariff would be imposed on Indonesian products entering the US, following direct negotiations with President Prabowo.

The new tariff rate is lower than the 32 percent previously announced by Trump in April.

Furthermore, both presidents agreed that Indonesia would purchase energy from the US worth US$15 billion, agricultural products worth US$4.5 billion, and 50 new Boeing aircraft, mostly Boeing 777s.
