Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian House of Representatives has expressed hope that President Prabowo Subianto and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will help mediate peace between Thailand and Cambodia, amid rising tensions along their disputed border.

Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, speaking at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Friday, said Indonesia maintains good relations with both Thailand and Cambodia.

“We plan to initiate communication in the hope that tensions in the ASEAN region do not escalate further,” he stated.

Ahmad also raised concerns about the safety of Indonesian citizens currently residing in both countries, urging the Foreign Ministry to advise those in affected areas to remain calm.

“We urge the Foreign Ministry to engage in communication efforts to reassure our citizens there,” he added.

Earlier on Friday, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, in a statement posted on platform X, expressing confidence that Thailand and Cambodia would resolve the ongoing border tensions through peaceful means.

“We are confident that the two neighboring countries will immediately return to peaceful means to settle their differences, in line with the principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation,” the statement read.

The ministry also said it is closely monitoring developments along the border and ensuring the safety and well-being of Indonesian citizens in the affected areas.

The conflict escalated following a landmine explosion in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province, which seriously injured several Thai soldiers. One soldier reportedly lost a leg.

In response, Thailand recalled its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelled Cambodia’s ambassador from Bangkok. An exchange of fire broke out along the border on Thursday (July 24), after the Thai Army ordered the closure of several access points to Cambodia.
