Deputy for Social Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, noted here on Friday that extremely poor people accounted for 0.85 percent of Indonesia's total population as of March 2025. The rate represents a decrease of 0.41 percentage points from March 2024.
Hartono clarified that people classified as poor are those whose monthly per capita expenditure falls below the poverty line.
Meanwhile, extremely poor people are those with a per capita expenditure below US$2.15 per day, according to the World Bank's extreme poverty threshold (2017 Purchasing Power Parity).
The release of extreme poverty data aligns with the implementation of Presidential Instruction Number 8 of 2025 on the Optimization of Poverty Alleviation and Extreme Poverty Eradication.
As stipulated in the presidential instruction, BPS is tasked with conducting surveys and calculating progress in poverty and extreme poverty alleviation.
In addition to extreme poverty, BPS also reported that the poverty rate in March 2025 stood at 8.47 percent, reflecting a decrease of 0.10 percentage points compared to September 2024 and a 0.56 percentage point decline from March 2024.
As of March 2025, the total number of people categorized as poor in Indonesia was 23.85 million.
The poverty line in March 2025 stood at Rp609,160 (approximately US$37.33) per capita per month, representing a 2.34 percent increase compared to September 2024.
The primary data source for calculating the March 2025 poverty and extreme poverty rates was the National Socioeconomic Survey for Consumption and Expenditure conducted in February 2025, which sampled 345 thousand households nationwide.
