Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of Commission I of the House of Representatives, Amelia Anggraini, has urged the government to take anticipatory steps, such as strengthening early warning systems, in response to rising tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

According to Anggraini, regional stability is vital for national development and security. She said that bilateral conflicts between neighboring countries must not be allowed to develop into open conflicts that can spread to other countries.

“Here Indonesia’s leadership will be tested, not only as a mediator, but also as a regional peacekeeper,” she added in Jakarta on Friday.

She said that through peaceful diplomacy, both bilaterally and within the ASEAN framework, Indonesia must encourage the two countries to exercise restraint, open dialogue, and seek peaceful resolutions.

According to the lawmaker, Indonesia has a proven track record in peace efforts in Southeast Asia, particularly in resolving the Cambodian conflict in the late 1980s and the Rakhine crisis in Myanmar.

She said she believes that the government needs to improve coordination with other ASEAN countries and prepare evacuation plans for Indonesian citizens in the affected regions, if the situation worsens.

“It included the impacts, especially regarding refugee flows, ideological mix, and also economic factors,” she said.

As the largest country in ASEAN and the founding member of the regional bloc, Indonesia has a moral and strategic responsibility to maintain stability in the Southeast Asian region, she added.

She said that the current tensions between Thailand and Cambodia are cause for concern because they can potentially disrupt regional peace and threaten ASEAN cooperation, which has been built on the foundation of consensus and non-confrontation.
