Jambi City (ANTARA) - The provincial government of Jambi aims to establish a partnership with the Investment Management Agency Danantara and the private sector to financially support coconut downstreaming efforts in the province.

“Knowing that Jambi has potential (in the coconut industry), we have approached Agriculture Minister (Andi Amran Sulaiman) to help direct Danantara to fund our downstreaming project, and the minister has expressed enthusiasm,” Jambi Governor Al Haris remarked in Jambi City on Saturday.

He noted that during a visit to Sungai Penuh City, Jambi, on Wednesday (July 23), Minister Sulaiman and relevant stakeholders engaged in serious discussions regarding downstreaming efforts aimed at increasing the selling value of Jambi’s coconuts.

The governor then highlighted that in addition to Danantara, his administration is eager to collaborate with business actors to advance downstreaming, which he believes is crucial for improving residents' living standards and boosting regional income.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the districts of West Tanjung Jabung and East Tanjung Jabung remain the coconut powerhouses of Jambi Province.

Citing statistical data, the Jambi leader underlined that the province can produce approximately four million coconuts across 118 thousand hectares of land, with 52 thousand hectares located in East Tanjung Jabung District.

The governor expressed hope that the downstreaming plan would run as expected to boost exports of processed coconut products to potential markets such as Singapore and Malaysia.

He reiterated that downstreaming natural resources, including coconuts, would bring economic benefits to local residents and governments, ultimately elevating the economic standing of Jambi.

“Hopefully, our plan will be translated into practice,” Haris concluded.
