The consensus was issued during the ongoing SCO Media and Think Tank Summit, which is being held in the capital of central China’s Henan Province from Wednesday to Sunday.
The event brought together more than 400 representatives from nearly 200 media outlets, think tanks, and government agencies from SCO member states, observer states, dialogue partners, as well as international and regional organizations.
The summit featured extensive exchanges on the theme “Carrying Forward the Shanghai Spirit and Jointly Building a Beautiful Homeland,” focusing on how media and think tanks can better enhance traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and build a closer SCO community with a shared future, according to the consensus.
The SCO plays an important role in promoting good-neighborliness, friendship, unity, and mutual trust among regional countries, safeguarding regional security and stability, and driving prosperity and development.
Media and think tanks should serve as bridges, tell the stories of Shanghai Cooperation effectively, highlight its achievements, and contribute wisdom and strength to advancing peace, stability, and development both regionally and globally, the consensus said.
Deepening political mutual trust and strengthening strategic alignment are crucial to the SCO’s sustained development and the safeguarding of national security and development interests.
SCO media and think tanks should intensify efforts to promote understanding of national conditions, development paths, and strategies of member states, foster communication, eliminate differences, build consensus, and respect each other’s development choices while safeguarding core interests, the representatives noted.
Safeguarding regional security and stability is a shared responsibility of SCO countries and a necessary step in addressing global challenges.
In the face of global uncertainty, SCO media and think tanks should advance the Global Security Initiative, amplify the SCO’s positions and actions on peace and stability, and create a favorable atmosphere for a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture, according to the consensus.
The consensus also stressed modernization as a common goal of SCO countries.
Media and think tanks should support the Global Development Initiative, share stories of economic integration and cooperation, consolidate consensus, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, and create conditions for shared prosperity and modernization.
Civilization becomes more colorful through exchanges and richer through mutual learning, the consensus stated.
It called for implementing the Global Civilization Initiative, promoting respect for diversity, and fostering mutual understanding through cooperation among governments, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society to achieve inclusive coexistence and cultural affinity among SCO nations.
The representatives also urged defending true multilateralism and improving global governance in the common interest of all SCO members.
Media and think tanks should promote the shared values of humanity, advocate extensive consultation and joint contribution, and send a strong message that the SCO should unite rather than divide, cooperate rather than confront, and act with fairness rather than hegemony to advance a more just international order.
The summit aims to build broad consensus among SCO media and think tanks, deepen practical cooperation in joint reporting, personnel training, academic exchange, and research, and inject new vitality into building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous shared future.
Under the guidance of the State Council Information Office, the summit is jointly hosted by Xinhua News Agency, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Henan Provincial People’s Government.
