Ternate (ANTARA) - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, has erupted once again, spewing volcanic ash up to 3,500 meters above its summit and prompting authorities to prohibit all activities within a 4-kilometer radius.

“The eruption occurred at around 3:38 p.m. local time (GMT+9), with an ash column reaching a height of 3,500 meters,” said Bambang Sugiono, an officer at the Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA Dukono), in a written statement received in Ternate on Sunday.

The ash column appeared white to gray in color, with thick intensity drifting toward the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 33 mm and lasted 279.84 seconds.

“The volcano, which stands at 1,087 meters above sea level, is currently at Alert Level II (Advisory),” Sugiono added.

He urged residents living near Mount Dukono, as well as visitors and tourists, to avoid climbing or approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater and to stay outside the 4-kilometer radius.

“Considering the frequent eruptions with volcanic ash and ash dispersion depending on wind direction and speed, the affected area is not fixed,” he explained.

Sugiono also advised the local community to always have masks or face coverings ready to avoid respiratory health risks posed by volcanic ash.

Earlier on the same day, at 5:45 a.m., Dukono erupted again, spewing an ash column up to 3,000 meters above its summit. The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with thick intensity, drifting toward the southwest and northwest.

This earlier eruption was also recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 33 mm and lasted 129.66 seconds, according to data from the PGA Dukono post in Mamuya Village, Galela District.
