Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) has begun evacuating residents from coastal areas in response to a tsunami warning issued after a powerful earthquake in eastern Russia, according to commander of TNI-AL’s Fleet Command, Vice Admiral Denih Hendrata.

In a short message to ANTARA in Jakarta on Wednesday, he informed that the navy units carrying out these operations include a naval base in Gorontalo province, led by Lieutenant Colonel Hanny Chandra.

He added that the Gorontalo Naval Base has set up three disaster emergency posts as temporary shelters for evacuees, including one at its command center.

According to Hendrata, 80 residents from South Leato village are currently sheltering at the command center, specifically in two of its buildings.

Furthermore, he said that the TNI-AL has prepared an ambulance and two lifeboats at the shelter, adding that navy officers are working with local government officials to secure the emergency post.

He emphasized that all navy personnel will remain on standby until the situation returns to normal.

Evacuees will be allowed to return to their homes once the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) declares the area safe, he added.

A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia on Wednesday morning, triggering tsunami warnings in countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Indonesia.

In response, the BMKG issued tsunami alerts for coastal areas in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua provinces, warning of possible waves of up to 0.5 meters.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Budi Gunawan, said that both the central and regional governments have prepared measures to anticipate a tsunami.

The measures include securing evacuation routes, managing crowds, and safeguarding critical coastal infrastructure.

“Public safety is the government’s top priority. I also urge residents to remain calm, not panic, and follow official instructions on the ground,” he added in Jakarta.
