"This project is a concrete manifestation of Indonesia's commitment to nature-based climate action and a contribution to global ecosystem restoration," Sulaiman told journalists on the sidelines of the opening of the 2025 Mangrove Festival (Mangrofest) at Alas Purwo National Park, Banyuwangi District, East Java, on Wednesday.
M4CR is a national-scale mangrove rehabilitation program managed by the Directorate General of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation at the Ministry of Forestry in collaboration with the World Bank.
The program aims to build coastal resilience through mangrove restoration, community empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration.
The M4CR mangrove rehabilitation program is being implemented in four priority provinces: Riau, North Sumatra, East Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan, with a target area of 41 thousand hectares by 2027.
As previously reported, Director General of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation at the Ministry of Forestry, Dyah Murtiningsih, stated that a community-based approach is prioritized in the M4CR project
She explained that this approach aims to ensure that conservation efforts go beyond planting to also include ongoing maintenance and sustainable utilization.
One of the series of activities held by the Ministry of Forestry as part of the M4CR is the 2025 Mangrove Festival.
The festival, running from late July to October, will showcase innovations, local wisdom, and best practices in mangrove rehabilitation from various regions.
Furthermore, the 2025 Mangrofest aims to foster cross-sector and cross-generational commitment to preserving mangrove forests as vital buffers for the future of Indonesia's coastlines.
