Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, has highlighted the importance of boosting fundamental research to ensure the Indonesian nation keeps pace with rapid global technological advancements.

“Mastery of science and technology, especially amid rapid development of technology, cannot be achieved without strengthening basic research,” he said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

Yuliarto added that mastery of science and technology starts with a strong foundation, and without such a foundation, the Indonesian nation will eventually become just a consumer of foreign technologies.

“We must ensure that our nation does not fail to master new technologies when new technologies emerge,” the minister stressed.

To achieve this end, he emphasized that fundamental research and downstream research must continue to be pursued simultaneously.

According to Yuliarto, Indonesian universities possess considerable research potential, with thousands of research projects conducted by lecturers and students every year. The lecturers are also considered to have world-class capabilities and must be involved in national strategic programs.

He expressed the hope that ministries and agencies will tap into the potential of universities extensively to address sectoral challenges.

“We also want the research to meet standards and be ready for commercialization because we are involving industries,” he said.
