Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry is collaborating with other ministries to implement Regulation Number 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operation in Child Protection (PP Tunas) to improve safeguards for children in cyberspace.

Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said here on Thursday that PP Tunas has been formulated to protect children from the harmful effects of cyberspace, particularly interactions with strangers, exposure to adult content, exploitation, addiction, and mental health issues.

She made the statement after inking a memorandum of understanding with the Home Affairs Ministry, Religious Affairs Ministry, Primary and Secondary Education Ministry, Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry, and Population and Family Development Ministry.

The MoU will serve as a framework for the regulation’s implementation. The regulation contains provisions for restricting children from accessing social media for certain periods, Hafid said.

“For example, to drive a vehicle, there’s minimum age requirement. We also believe that to enter cyberspace, which may pose similar risk, or even worse, compared to driving, there must be a minimum age requirement,” she explained.

She highlighted the importance of cross-ministerial collaboration in enforcing the regulation. For example, the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry will suggest activities to engage children before they become eligible to access social media.

Moreover, the Religious Affairs Ministry and Primary and Secondary Education Ministry will educate children about the importance of child protection in cyberspace.

“As for the Home Affairs Ministry, maybe they can assist by establishing child-friendly regulations and giving proper spaces for children to do activities,” Hafid said.

Meanwhile, the Population and Family Development Ministry will focus on families, given that families are the primary environment where children spend most of their time.

She also reminded parents to monitor children’s activities in cyberspace and social media platforms, and urged digital platforms to implement child protection measures in line with Indonesian laws.

“This collaborative measure is important, and becomes the only key for PP Tunas’ success,” the minister stressed.
