Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Regional Operations 1 Jakarta (KAI Daop 1 Jakarta) has reported an increase in train-related accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians from January to July 2025, compared to the same period last year.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta spokesperson Ixfan Hendriwintoko said on Tuesday that there were 33 collisions involving trains and vehicles at level crossings, and 111 incidents involving trains and pedestrians along railway tracks.

“These figures are higher than those recorded during the same period in 2024, when there were 29 vehicle-related accidents at level crossings and 92 incidents involving pedestrians on railway tracks,” Ixfan stated in Jakarta.

“Each collision not only causes harm to victims but also disrupts train operations and poses a risk to safety and punctuality,” he added.

The rise in accidents has prompted KAI to step up its public awareness campaigns targeting motorists and the general public.

To reduce the number of incidents, KAI Daop 1 Jakarta has been conducting regular rail safety outreach programs, especially in high-risk areas around level crossings and along tracks frequently accessed by residents.

These outreach activities are held almost every week and include direct engagement at level crossings, trackside communities, and schools, aiming to educate people—particularly students—about railway safety from an early age.

During these campaigns, KAI personnel distribute brochures and display banners with safety messages. Information is also disseminated through mass media and social media platforms.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta has also partnered with local community groups and influential figures to strengthen cultural and emotional connections with the public.

“The involvement of local communities and public figures is crucial. Their influence and closeness to residents help ensure safety messages are received more effectively,” Ixfan said.

He further urged the public not to cross level crossings when barriers are down, stressing that trains have long braking distances and cannot stop suddenly.

Residents are also advised to prioritize safety by stopping briefly and checking both directions before crossing the tracks.

Moreover, the public is strongly discouraged from engaging in any activities along railway tracks—whether walking, playing, or using them as shortcuts—as they are not designated public spaces.

“It’s important to remember that safety around railway tracks is a shared responsibility. Do not ignore signs and signals, and always obey the rules at level crossings,” Ixfan concluded.
