Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Ministry plans to integrate TransJakarta, the public bus service, with Tanjung Priok Port to ensure more regular transportation services.

"We have initiated discussions, and this is only the beginning. We will highlight it again. We try to initiate this because we have data," the ministry's director of transportation modes facility integration, Sigit Irfansyah, stated here on Tuesday.

According to Sigit, TransJakarta buses serve Tanjung Priok, but only on request, such as during Eid. He believes TransJakarta is an ideal solution to reduce traffic congestion in the city, as its advantages, such as affordable fares, encourage private vehicle users to switch to public transportation.

Some stakeholders at Tanjung Priok Port, including Customs and Pelindo, have expressed readiness to support the integration, he remarked.

"Point is, they support and expect that by extending the operation of public transportation to the port area, the number of private vehicles in Tanjung Priok Port will decrease," he remarked.

The ministry's directorate general of transportation modes integration is working to improve the integrated transportation system to increase logistics efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and boost the national economy.

On Friday (Aug 1), the director general of transportation modes integration, Risal Wasal, highlighted several challenges Indonesia faces in the transportation sector, such as severe traffic jams, expensive logistics, and reliance on road-based transportation.

Wasal remarked that those issues can be addressed by developing an integrated transportation system across regions and transport modes.

He emphasized that transportation is more than just about infrastructure; it is about ensuring seamless connectivity between all services.

Hence, the transportation system must be transformed to enable a seamless travel experience, such as a unified ticketing system for various travel modes and smooth transit connections, he noted.

The rampant use of private vehicles, comprising 140 million motorbikes and 20 million cars, worsens traffic congestion and carbon emissions, particularly in urban areas.
