Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Maman Abdurrahman called for the fulfillment of the right to training and entrepreneurship for people with disabilities to realize a more inclusive economy in Indonesia.

Abdurrahman, in his statement here on Thursday, noted that people with disabilities have big opportunities and the right to training and entrepreneurship.

"This is stipulated in Law Number 8 of 2016 concerning People with Disabilities, along with three other core rights: the right to work, the right to accessibility, and the right to education," he remarked.

Furthermore, he assessed that entrepreneurship must be optimized to accommodate people with disabilities, while also being a form of affirmative action by the government.

"One of the efforts to expand opportunities for people with disabilities is encouraging the spirit and opportunities for entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the government's support will be effective if we collaborate to optimize the entrepreneurial ecosystem," he said.

The minister further said that not all companies are aware of the need to accommodate people with disabilities, adding that there are still challenges faced by people with disabilities who run micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

These challenges include limited access to financing, a lack of technology adoption and digitalization, and low business competitiveness.

In terms of financial and financing access, he cited Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data in 2020, which showed that only 24.3 percent of people with disabilities aged over 15 years had bank accounts.

Meanwhile, the rate of those who had access to bank credits only stood at 14.2 percent.

In technology and digitalization, the data showed that only 1.1 percent of people with disabilities aged over 15 years used the internet.

To this end, he emphasized the importance of collaboration of relevant stakeholders to ensure people with disabilities' right to training and entrepreneurship can be fulfilled in accordance with the mandate of the law.
