“We have submitted an official request to the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist in the repatriation process of the Indonesian citizen who is a human trafficking victim,” he informed here on Friday.
In addition to the request, Uma said that he has directly coordinated with the relevant parties at both national and international levels to secure MIS’ repatriation.
“We have coordinated with the Foreign Ministry and the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia to ensure that the repatriation process is under strict monitoring and supervision,” he added.
Uma said that MIS had been working as a scammer in Cambodia. On July 16, 2025, the Cambodian police uncovered the online scamming network and detained human trafficking victims employed by the syndicate, including MIS, he informed.
MIS is currently under the custody of Cambodian immigration authorities and was promised repatriation through coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh. However, as of Friday, he had not returned to Indonesia.
According to information provided by the embassy, 330 Indonesian citizens are facing a similar issue as MIS in Cambodia.
Uma urged the government to strengthen regulations and oversight of illegal employment overseas. He also asked the public to be more cautious about overseas job offers and only go through legal channels to get work overseas.
