Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) has sealed and investigated 10 companies related to a series of forest and land fires (karhutla), with two others already receiving administrative sanctions.

"There are also eight non-corporate parties undergoing similar processes, and one non-corporate party is under the investigation phase in the Sultan Syarif Hasyim Forest Park (Tahura) in Riau," the ministry's Director General of Law Enforcement, Dwi Januanto Nugroho, said in a statement on Monday.

He detailed that sealing actions were carried out in various regions, including in West Kalimantan (Kalbar) against six entities: FWL, CMI, DAS, HKI, MTI, and UKIJ; and in Riau against three entities: DRT, RUJ, and SAU.

Moreover, the seal-off was also carried out in Jambi on the SH company, in South Sumatra against land owned by the PML corporation, and in Bangka Belitung against a BRS company.

Based on data from law enforcement agencies, the distribution of cases by province includes seven cases in West Kalimantan, 10 cases in Riau, one case in Jambi, one case in South Sumatra, and one case in North Sumatra.

Previously, the Ministry of Forestry had conducted 1,689 firefighting operations in the field by the Ministry's Manggala Agni, in collaboration with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), National Police, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), regional governments, and the community.

Nugroho noted that data showed the wide coverage of enforcement operations and highlighted the Ministry's efforts in suppressing forest fires throughout Indonesia.

His office would not tolerate forest fires, and all offenders will face prosecution, in line with applicable regulations and without discrimination, Nugroho said.

Further, firm action must be enforced since forest fires not only damage ecosystems and destroy biodiversity, but also cause enormous economic losses, threaten public health due to smoke, and increase carbon emissions, which worsens global warming.

"Therefore, we consider law enforcement as an absolute step to provide a deterrent effect, protect natural resources, and ensure forest sustainability for future generations," noted Nugroho.
